The world watched in horror as a nuclear device wiped an entire mountain range off the face of the Earth. Countries around the world scrambled to accuse the parties who have the stockpile of nukes capable of pulling the stunt but before another world war could break, a video taking responsibility for the deed goes viral online as a mysterious man wearing a monopoly man mask provides all the evidence and insider knowledge needed to prove himself to be the perpetrator. This man represents a group of likeminded individuals and a very specific set of skillsets had built the weapon that literally shook the world and explains that they are following an ideology set down by a long dead man to set the world right and that to achieve that end, they had prepared two such devices and that they are selling off the second for an appropriate price.
The group had set up a website through which anyone can bid for the rights to the weapon and also to announce if the weapon was still available for sale or not. They go on to explain that the bids made do not necessarily have to be of just material wealth as they are looking for bids that are "worthy" of what they're asking for and that if they are met with multiple successful bids, they will choose the one with more value. The video ends with the members of the group unmasking themselves to say their piece before shooting themselves in the head and a message that if the site or the video were to be taken down, the weapon's handlers will detonate it within a month's time.
Panic sets in at first about what to do but as time passes it becomes clear that it is not so easy to make a successful bid. Years pass with no change in the situation and the threat is almost forgotten but then one day the site begins sharing details of failed bids made to them. Many are trolls but some are recognized to be doublespeak used by certain agencies in major countries so tensions rise again. The real game changer however comes not long after that as the site changes the status of the weapon from "Available" to "Unavailable" and a bid is listed as successful but the nature of the bid was omitted. This is the point where world begins its descent into hell in a race to make the bid to save the world.
The twist is that the nuke goes back on sale at the end of the story. It was never sold and that the successful bid made was to buy the rights to buy the nukes for a month. The nuke itself is built into an actively used shipping vessel that was prepared years before the first shot was detonated.
