A young girl wakes up in a futuristic hospital where she's greeted by her equally youthful doctor. He tells her that she's been in a terrible accident and that due to the nearly lethal extent of her injuries she's been kept on ice for a very long time and it's only relatively recently that they started up a program where they revive patients like her. He tells her to try taking a step forward and thankfully she manages it perfectly without collapsing on herself. She goes to hug the doctor in gratitude for the medical miracle but to her astonishment she simply passes through him as if he wasn't there.
As she lies on the floor in confusion, the doctor puts on a wry smile and a peculiar looking glove as he explains to her that her little miracle isn't what she thinks. He offers his glove hand to her insisting she take it and to her elation she can actually touch it. He helps her up and says to try pulling back on him but she finds that she can't even budge him much less slip out of his hold. He then presents his other hand and slips it right through her held out arm and reveals that she isn't physically there.
The way it works is that people like her have been hurt too badly to live normal lives anymore so they removed her brain from her body and put it into a special life support system. This system preserves her mind and allows her to live in a virtual body that co-opts a city-wide augmented reality hologram system so they can have a chance at reclaiming some semblance of a normal life. He mentions that she got revived just in time for a new update that will spare her the issue of having only bland tasting hologram foodstuffs to try.
By this point her patience wearing thin so she balks when the doctor informs her that she'll be under his care from now on and he expects her to serve him well as his assistant. Her family basically sold her off as experiment subject to keep her alive and now she has to work off the debt since she really doesn't have anyone left who'll take her. Thus begins her new lease on life in this strange new world that she's not quite a part of now.
The twist is that both sides are ghosts partitioned from each other and mankind went extinct physically years ago.
